History as a guide to the future.

Marshall, you write superbly, follow APA style, and know how to extract value from research and apply it. This writer believes more than ever that we are going to see a return to religious values in our affairs as we suffer the implosion and explosion of materialistic greed in our lives. Religion, not philosophy or politics, will become the frame of reference and analysis again. Will and Ariel Durant, great American historians, pointed out in their seminal The Lessons of History that when human systems - economic, political, social, etc. - fail persons in them. The people will turn to religion. I am reading a book on futurist predictions for the next ten years called What's Next published in 2008. In it is a powerful essay on the coming trend toward religious standards, anchors in our affairs. It takes more than technology to create a healthy future. It also takes healthy values to create a healthy sociology to guide and apply the technology. Too many futurists are techno-determinists and automatic progress because of technology fanatics. This futurist knows the value of technology, yes, but he knows the greater value of the moral decisions humans make about using technology. This is no new. We are simply relearning it again.
